That’s always nice to hear…right? The honest truth is that sometimes it isn’t. When you step into entrepreneurship, networking becomes your lifeline. What makes networking and long-term relationship building work for some, but not others? Authenticity.
If someone looks at you and repeats that all too common mantra of, “Nice to meet you” and it falls flat as a pancake made out of day old concrete, chances are you won’t remember that person fondly, if you even remember them at all. We’re surrounded by fake on a daily basis. People are sick of fake. They want to interact with someone that’s real. Be authentic. Be genuine. Know your audience and your limits.
I’m not telling you to be so blunt and honest that you stand up at Uncle Hector’s wedding and toast to the hairy mole on his nose. You can keep SOME things to yourself. Just be real where it counts. Sometimes relationships are a good fit. Sometimes they’re not. Learn how to recognize when they’re not and let them go. This goes for personal and business alike. Not all clients are a good fit, so don’t focus on how much money you can get out of them. The focus always needs to be on maintaining balanced, symbiotic relationships in everything you do. If you pursue a bad match it will end badly and your personal and business reputations both will likely take a nasty hit.
Learn yourself. Learn your business. Learn how to read people and recognize when the best decision is to walk away or even refer them to another agency that you feel would be a better fit. What you put out into this world my friends, is always what you’ll get back. So go forth and be kind, courageous, genuine and generous. Be good to people and they’ll be good to you.
